Grupo Lobo (Wolf Group) is an independent, non-profit association, recognized as public utility, founded in 1985 with the goal to contribute to the Conservation of Iberian Wolf and its habitat in Portugal, where the wolf is threatened of extinction.
In 1987 Grupo Lobo established a conservation strategy entitled Signatus Project. This project aims to contribute to the conservation of the Iberian Wolf in Portugal through a multidisciplinary approach.
To increase awareness on wolf ecology and behaviour, talks and seminars are organized and didactic and divulgation material are produced and disseminated. Talks to students and the general public are also conducted throughout the country, as well exchanges information with wolf experts and organizations all over the world.
Grupo Lobo it is also responsible for the establishment and current management of the `Centro de Recuperação do Lobo Ibérico – CRLI´ (Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre). The center was created in order to provide a suitable environment and a safe sanctuary for wolves that can no longer live in the wild, or have been rescued from illegal captivity, injured or disabled.
Grupo Lobo works with local communities in way to recover and promote the use of livestock guarding dogs of national breeds as a measure to reduce wolf damage and the resulting conflicts.
